Two different geological structures sit on either side of the Dardanelles: rockier, firmer ground on the Anatolian side, and locally soft, water retaining sedimentary layers on the Thracian side. The three situations we meet most often in Çanakkale
Salt laden wind. In strait and coastal settlements the wind carries salt onto building surfaces. Once salt penetrates concrete it accelerates corrosion of the reinforcement, so surface protection is a separate topic in buildings near the coast.
Wind load and roof fixing. The wind regime in the region is strong. On mechanically fastened roof membrane systems the fixing density and the reinforcement at perimeter zones must be set according to wind uplift. Insufficient fixing leads to damage starting at the edges.
Seasonal use of holiday property. In buildings closed for part of the year, poor ventilation leads to condensation. Damp here is not always a leak, and waterproofing carried out without making that distinction will not produce a result.
What we look at during the survey
The condition of elevations exposed to the sea and open wind, salt and corrosion marks in the concrete, the existing fixing method and edge details on the roof, the ventilation arrangement in seasonally used buildings, and whether the damp is a leak or condensation.
