Foundation drainage is the system that collects groundwater and seepage accumulating around a building and carries it away from the structure. Its purpose is to stop water from applying constant pressure against the retaining wall. Once that pressure is removed, the waterproofing layer lasts far longer. When it is not removed, even the best membrane eventually gives way.
Does your building need foundation drainage
If any of the following signs are present, missing drainage is a strong possibility.
Damp appearing on basement walls a day or two after rainfall and disappearing in the dry season. Rising damp advancing as a horizontal band at ground level. Salt efflorescence at the base of the wall, blistering paint and crumbling plaster. Water pooling in the basement with a delay after rain.
Soil type matters as well. In clayey, impermeable ground water cannot drain away, so it collects around the foundation and applies pressure. In regions with a high water table such as Sakarya and Kocaeli, drainage is necessary in almost every building.
What the system consists of
Perforated drainage pipe
Laid at the base of the wall, just above foundation level. It is set to a fall of at least one centimetre per metre and connected to a collection chamber or discharge point. A pipe laid without fall does not carry water, it only stores it.
Filter geotextile
Wraps around the gravel fill. It stops fine soil particles from entering the gravel and the pipe and clogging the system. This is the most frequently skipped detail in drainage work and the most frequent cause of failure. Drainage built without geotextile clogs within a few years and behaves as if it were never installed.
Washed gravel fill
Surrounds the pipe and lets water reach it. Washed gravel free of fines must be used. Dusty, mixed material blinds the filter in a short time.
Drainage and protection board
Applied to the outer face of the retaining wall over the waterproofing layer. Its dimpled surface protects the waterproofing from mechanical damage during backfill and lets water flow freely towards the pipe. The dimpled face must point towards the wall. Fitted the other way round, the system loses its function.
Critical details in application
Discharge point. The collected water has to go somewhere. If natural fall is not available, a pumping chamber is required. Leaving the pipe end open means the water returns to the foundation.
Inspection chambers. Chambers must be provided at corners and along long runs. Without them, a blockage cannot be located or cleared.
Backfill material. If the clayey soil from the excavation is put straight back, water again reaches the foundation. Free draining backfill is part of the system.
Separating surface water. Rainwater downpipes must not be connected to the foundation drain. Roof flow floods the line and disables the system. Rainwater is taken away on a separate line.
Relationship with waterproofing. Drainage is not an alternative to waterproofing. Drainage installed without waterproofing on the wall face reduces pressure but does not stop moisture transfer.
How the work proceeds
Survey. Soil type, water table level, existing damp patterns and discharge options are assessed on site. Excavation depth and the route of the line are decided from this assessment.
Excavation. The ground is opened down to foundation level along the wall, with attention to excavation safety and distance to neighbouring structures.
Surface preparation and waterproofing. The wall face is cleaned, necessary repairs are made and waterproofing is applied.
Drainage installation. Pipe, gravel, geotextile and board are placed in sequence and chambers are built.
Testing and backfill. The line is tested with water to verify fall and flow, then backfilled in compacted layers.

Can drainage be added to an existing building
Yes. Where there is room to excavate around the building, drainage can be installed in existing structures. If excavation is impossible because of a neighbouring plot or road, internal drainage and injection are evaluated as alternatives.
Is drainage enough on its own
No. Drainage reduces water pressure, waterproofing stops moisture transfer. The result is durable only when the two work together.
How long does the system last
With the right filter geotextile, washed gravel and inspection chambers in place, the system works for the life of the building. Most failures come not from materials but from clogging and errors in fall.
